Do you know that with your 160 UTME scores you can still study medicine and law in any university?

Once Malcolm X said, “Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”. Though it sounds fascinating in today’s world ” Gaming Laptop” sounds more fascinating. Well never mind, I am also in that group.

Though education nowadays has become an easy element but ensuring educational provision in predominantly rural areas especially in the northeast has been a real challenge. Nigeria has been one of them though this country began to develop its educational system between  1945 to 1970. And if we talk about today’s (2020) system, it would be no less than a surprise!

Being the seventh most populous country in the world and being a victim of poverty, inadequate classroom, teaching aids, Nigeria has passed a very long way from the “Dark” phase of illiteracy. The minister of Nigeria urged JAMB to combine all the examinations into one exam that’s known as the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for the undergraduates as a step to the new era of development.

UTME is a computer-based examination that is designed to assess problem-solving, critical thinking, and knowledge of scientific concepts. The duration of this exam is 2 hours and 45 minutes and minimum cut-off marks regarding different institutions are 160,120,100 and 100.

Universities – 160

Polytechnics – 120

Colleges of Education -100

Innovation Enterprise- 100

So,160 is the minimum to get into universities

The need to ensure only competent and qualified candidates are admitted into Nigerian Universities, this 160 mark can be called a standard benchmark for any other country.  This UTME system shows that education is the bedrock of Nigeria’s economy and is an indispensable instrument for their development. So, an undergraduate examinee should prepare hard and give much priority in English to achieve 160 or even more to drive himself/herself to the highest peak of his/her dream.
